For the Love of Lucite
Ahh, lovely Lucite- our translucent friend used throughout the design world for a contemporary splash or a retro twist. The back story? Lucite is the brand name of a polyacrylic that was discovered by DuPont in 1931. Like our familiar friends Bakelite and Plexiglas, Lucite was used extensively in war supplies during WWII. Post-war, Lucite was repurposed (how green!) into jewelry, furniture, and handbags that are now highly collectible. Go big: consider dotting lucite pieces throughout your reception via furniture vignettes for a decidedly cosmopolitan twist. Lie low: revel in the trend by donning a bauble or two for a fresh take on big day jewelry. If it still seems a bit too “Bienvenido a Mi-ami” to you, check out its clever infiltration (and colorful infusion) into traditional design below:

A Tribute To Tony
On Saturday, October 17, 2009, our coastal community lost a man of great dignity, kindness, and talent, Tony Mayo Mincey of Johns Island, SC. A lovely and touching service was held on Thursday, October 22 on the water at the Maritime Center in downtown Charleston, with pelicans flying overhead and the sun setting on the faces of so many who loved Tony dearly.
Tony was the right-hand man and beloved husband of one of our favorite local bakers, Elaine Mincey of Elaine’s Events: Cakes of Distinction. An avid offshore fisherman and true salty dog, he enjoyed cooking and entertaining for family and friends. Tony was also the backbone of Elaine’s super-successful cake artistry enterprise…part tech guru, part driver, part protector of the delicate creations Elaine’s Events delivers to weddings and parties all over the region each weekend. We remember fondly how he would wait patiently as we finished up an on-site task to bolt to the cake’s location at a venue for a quick preview before his next stop. With great pride in his sparkly blue eyes, he would always say: ‘Hey girl- what do you think? You happy?’ To him we answer now: ‘of course we’re happy, Tony- we got to spend time here on Earth with you!’
Below, a few of their gorgeous cakes…many delivered in high heat, hard rain, intense humidity, on a barge, on a boat, you name it! Each is a testament to the care and dedication Tony Mincey offered to each bride of Blue Moon Events.

Elaine Mincey is buoyed by the support and comfort of area bakers, friends, peers, and artisans who will enable her to breathe a bit during our high wedding season and continue to build her amazing business…surely with Tony’s spirit infused into her daily cake craftsmanship. We’ll miss you, Tony!
