Hot or not : Hair

by Calder Clark on June 23rd, 2010

I have an open mind. Hair extensions? Why not. An edgy braid woven into your updo? Sorta Lauren Conrad circa 2 years ago, but okay, if you so desire. But I have to draw the line with hair somewhere, people- see below.

What’s hot:

Adding shape and definition to your lovely chignon.

What’s not hot:

Do NOT deploy the banana clip. It went to its Eighties Crypt along with scrunchies, where together they spoon for Eternity. I definitely picked up one of these beauties off the dance floor of a recent wedding of mine. I’m not kidding. I felt tele-transported back to 1982. The best part? It was love-worn…like there were a few teeth missing, as though it were in daily use.

What’s hot:

A full updo (hate that word, but what’s a better one? coiffure?) with a gorgeous brooch for securing.

What’s not hot:

Prom tendrils à-deux . . .

What’s hot:

I love how the smoothness of the front of her ‘do is juxtaposed against the fabric bloom.

What’s not hot:

A bush. On your head.

What’s hot:

A single bloom, tucked not directly behind yer ear like you’re fixin’ to whistle “Mele Kalikimaka”, but somewhere face-framing.

What’s not hot:

A towering bouffant of fleurs along with face crystals. I am so frightened I may hide under my sofa for a few weeks, lest this gal be out and about in my hometown.

What’s your wedding day ‘do?

Pink Champagne . . . on ice

by Calder Clark on June 21st, 2010

Why on Father’s Day would my über-sweet husband DVR the US Open Pebble Beach so that I could take my own advice on movies to rent and pop in An Affair to Remember? Simply because I am a saaaaa-ppy wedding designer in my heart of hearts and that he is a total gem.

Where have I been? How could I not know that so many movies we love and know were based on the perfection that is this classic? Shame on moi.

Quick highlights and commentary:

Cary Grant was dashing at all ages.

I am most definitely from another time . . . I waffle between Elizabethan England and 1950s New England (sorry, South).

Deborah Kerr uses words like “divine” and “dahling” throughout the movie. Love her.

Pink champagne was made famous by this movie . . . pass the crystal coupes.

Vintage gowns like this one rock my world:

So naturally I had to scour la web for a few girly pinks and throw this together:

Third row credit: Martha Stewart Weddings cake (2nd tile)

What silly romantic thing have you done lately?
