Arcane on the Brain

by Calder Clark on July 20th, 2010

People ask me frequently where I get my inspiration, and I find myself thinking “from the quirkiest of sources”. Sure, it might be as straightforward as a snippet from an interiors magazine spawning an entire panoply of bold color choices and polished tabletop design. More often, inspiration comes from the obscure: a vintage photograph tucked away in an antique mall booth becomes the focal point of the entire event design (coming soon!). It’s really hard to pinpoint, but when it hits me, it washes over me in the truest sense of the a-ha moment.

When I stumble across art like this, I long to channel even a fragment of the innate talent and heart it must take to produce such beauty. Anne Siems also has that effect on me. I came across her paintings at Blackberry Farm, and I still haven’t been able to shake them from my thoughts. Siems studied at University of the South in the late 80s on a Fulbright scholarship, and received her M.F.A. from Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin in 1991. She believes that her work is an open book- free of innuendo and open for you to interpret as you will. Revel in the below with me.
