Hot or Not: Scents
Lest you stylish folks think the below goes without saying, think again. Without revealing my sources (ie those who need a good talkin’-to), I have to make a scent statement once and for all.
What’s HOT:

Deploying fresh herbs, garden roses, lavender, peonies, and the like in your tabletop design for your big day? Totally chic. Hard to find hothouse flowers with scents these days, as many are forced so fast by commercial growers that they don’t develop that gorgeous heady scent. Just talk to your floral designer about wanting something lovely wafting throughout your party, and hope they can make it happen. One of my favorite weddings ever had thousands of gardenias hand-wired to rose bushes that hadn’t bloomed yet- and the smell shaped the entire evening and all of our memories of it.
What’s NOT:

If it comes in a jar from Yankee Candle, it isn’t allowed within a mile of your party. In fact, if I find it in your powder room at home, I’m tossing it. If the words cinnamon or vanilla are even used contextually when speaking of your wedding, we’ve got a problem. Pre-poured heart candles are perhaps one of the most egregious offenders- you know they’re going to smell like Red Hots, cinnamon, or worse- gasp- mulberry. The point is: if it’s pre-poured, it’s probably grossly synthetic and will overpower the subtlest of dishes at your dinner. No one wants seared peppercorn tenderloin with a side of musky cherry lemonade (yes, it exists!)

OK, I just found your blog and I embarassingly just spent the better part of the day perusing your entire blog. If, in the near future you feel the need to have a giveaway where the winner would be the person who can recite the most random info relating to one of your fantastic posts that was written, say..a year and half ago..then this just might be a contest where I could yell ‘winner, winer, chicken dinner!’ Seriously, I love your blog and I love your talents! If I wasn’t an interior designer, I would love to be an event planner. Happy New Year! Shannon {www.shannonberrey.com]
