Chucktown 411 : Charleston Lunch Spots

by Calder Clark on January 20th, 2011

Where the locals eat lunch:

Located at 18 Pinckney Street in a classic 18th century Charleston single, Cru Café offers the best in upscale comfort food. Guests of the restaurant enjoy indoor and outdoor porch seating, gourmet comfort food, a wine list tailored to the varied menu, and rich, satisfying desserts.

Yum. I would steer you toward one dish or another, except it’s all good. Tues-Sat, 11 am to 3 p m. 843.534.2434. Resos recommended. Click here for the menu.

G+M’s. Fast and French. It doesn’t matter what you call it, you’ve got to go. I recommend a verre du vin (glass of crisp white!) and a Croque Monsieur. 98 Broad Street. Mon: 8 am to 4 pm. T/W/Th: 8 am to 10 pm. F/Sa: 8 am to 10:30 pm. 843.577.9797. Always packed, but belly up anyway. Click here for the menu.

Magnolias is quintessential South, totally charming Chucktown. If fried green tomatoes are on the day’s menu, you have to have . . . plus I die over their housemade potato chips and I don’t even dig potato chips (sick, I know). 185 East Bay. 843.577.7771. Lunch hours: Mo-Sat 11:30 am to 3:45 pm, Su: 10 am to 3:45 pm. Click here for the menu.

Caviar and Bananas is Charleston’s answer to Dean & Deluca, ie where we go for a quick gourmet wrap- think beets and goat cheese. Or, we run here to pick up semi-elegant grub for a Wednesday or Thursday night get-together for 5-10 peeps. 51 George Street. Open Weekdays 7am-9pm; Sat 8am-9pm; Sun 8am-8pm. 843.577.7757. Click here for the menu.

S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad). The old standby. Interior decor won’t blow your skirt up, but the food may. 192 East Bay. 843.723.3424. Click here for menu.

Pick me up something while you’re out?
