The Best Bubblies

by Calder Clark on December 14th, 2011

We’ve all seen pretty champagne stemware, stemless champagne glasses, and the like. But thanks to Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, we’re more enamored of the regal champagne coupe. BTW, history has it that the shape is based on part of the Dauphine’s anatomy. Scandaleux!

The trouble? They’re hard to find. But our friends at BHLDN got it right this season with these stunning, blush-hued stunners below. We’ll be using them for a super-feminine wedding in March.

And we’re starting to think beyond regular champagne for our upcoming nuptials.

Why not a deep red, rich Lambrusco, a bubbly that hails from Italy and cuts through heavy hors d’oeuvre’s perfectly?

Or a rosy Cava made from indigenous Spanish grapes? Our favorite is Castellroig, served at Fig here in Charleston (big thanks to the restaurant’s cocktail expert Brooks Reitz for the introduction! We’re hooked).

But in truth, anything with bubbles will do, and we’ve all been referring to this cheat sheet from Food & Wine magazine. Every suggestion is great, but we’re really partial to the NV Gloria Ferrer Sonoma Brut. What’s not to love about something that’s delicious and affordable?

Cheers!

Vintage Cocktail Mania + Retro Ice Bucket Roundup

by Calder Clark on September 1st, 2011

Charleston is seeing this huge resurgence of vintage cocktail clubs, namely The Belmont, The Gin Joint, The Cocktail Club, and more. Loving it . . . very Mad Men.

I’m also an ice NUT- my favorite item from our recent renovation was perhaps the least expensive- our loud-as-Hell KitchenAid icemaker. Forget the Scotch cubes and even the Rabbit Pellet Ice from the Hoshizaki, love me some Scrabble Tile. Great for Diet Cokes, sweet tea, and mixed drinks.

Don’t you think you need a retro ice bucket to go along with your Sidecars and Singapore Slings? I do.

Here’s my little Ebay roundup below- but paws off the Tortoise fella, he’s M-I-N-E!

like I said- MINE.

I know- cigarettes near ice, gross- but also hysterical and kinda fabulous at the same time.

Love this wood animal.

Punchy plaid, anyone? Like a Sixties Madras.

Yes to anything signed Culver- and this Ferris-Wheel-style rack is the BEAST.

Well orange is the new black, you know.

Upping Ice’s Ante

by Calder Clark on August 2nd, 2011

Loving these wee ideas for summer . . . especially edible fleurs frozen into cubes? Gorgeous- standing alone in almost any cocktail! The whole strawberry cube packs a might punch . . . and Martha’s flavored cubes are too pretty to pass up.
