In the Spotlight : Sally King Benedict

An artist of this caliber needs little introduction- suffice it to say, she’s one of our fresh-faced gorgeous young locals and I’m so thrilled to watch her star on the rise. I discovered her lovely work over on my friend Chassity’s blog– but more to come on Madame Evans later. Enjoy the below!

A few things about you, your art, your inherent you-ness . . .
SKB: I love art and feel so lucky to be able to do it as my passion and my living. I am inspired by something new every day. I have been painting as long as I can remember, and growing up in Atlanta with parents who had a broad appreciation for the arts definitely shaped my interest at a young age. My paintings are created through the process of simply “doing”. There is no concrete outline of the way I work, as I thrive off the daily challenges that different mediums, emotions and colors present me.

What makes you tick . . .what inspires the art, how often do you paint, do you paint in your pjs, etc . . .
SKB: Simple Beauty, surprising color combinations, delicious food, a good collection of anything, the salty air, music I can dance to, seeing a great movie. I paint 5 days a week….usually:) I paint at my studio at REDUX contemporary art center. I can definitely have odd hours bc you never know when you are going to hit a stride. I do try and be home in time for dinner with my husband every night.

Tell us one industry ditty . . .
SKB: Raw materials can sometimes be the most luxurious thing to an artist. We all go nuts when we see a big piece of raw linen in someone’s studio.
Your best friend is coming to visit Charleston for the first time. Where would you take him/her to:

eat? SKB: Fast and French

drink? SKB: The Belmont

sight-see? SKB: The end of folly beach/the lighthouse
chillax? SKB: My front porch
Your ideal Saturday afternoon is spent . . . .
SKB: On a boat with friends.
What’s just one thing that sets you apart from your contemporaries? What makes your art stand out?

SKB: The colors. My ability to try new things. If I stick with only what I know, I get bored.

What’s one (fun/weird/crazy) thing we wouldn’t know about you?
SKB: I’m really good at singing happy birthday to people.

Hollywood calls and they’re going to make a movie of your life. What’s your opening musical score (or the top hit on the soundtrack?)
SKB: Cut Copy’s track “Far Away” from their album “In Ghost Colours”

No day-in-the-life-of-you is complete without . . .
SKB: Snuggling with my 2 kitties
What’s the most rewarding thing about your work?
SKB: What I put in and what I get out is up to me.
